I’m so thrilled to be have been asked to share Zack’s SickKids story tomorrow May 31st during the SickKids Radiothon on Newstalk 1010 at 5pm! We are even being interviewed by John Tory!
Every year, I listen to the children and to the parents during the annual radiothon and each year I have been inspired and enormously emotional. The stories can be uplifting and also incredible moving and sad, but all the stories talk about miracles. There are parents of children whose first days were spent at SickKids, parents who are there now and even parents like us, who spent our last days with our kids in the hospital. I’m so glad that even though Zack is no longer with us, his story of miracles can continue.
As I gather up the photos and memories from our first and last days at SickKids, I’m reflecting on what our story is….
Zack’s life began at SickKids. We will forever be grateful to the hospital that gave us over three amazing years with our son. Had we never had that time with him, we never would have been blessed with the gifts he brought to our lives and to our family. We wouldn’t have know the joy that we now know. We might have taken the small stuff for granted or not hugged our other boys quite so tight. Our boys might not be as tolerant of kids who are different and our friends and families would not have been touched by the unforgettable light of his smile.
And in the end, we were grateful too. Grateful for the dignity and respect that they showed to us when we were offered the parent’s room to have some privacy and grieve. We are thankful for the support from doctors, nurses, social workers and clergy during Zack’s last days. Not knowing how to preserve our last memories, the nurses guided us through to create the treasures we now hold close.
Please take some time to be inspired- listen to the stories all day on Newstalk 1010 (and to us at 5pm!)…and hopefully it will motivate you to donate what you can…here is one fun way to do that!
