I’m Heather Hamilton, the very lucky stay-at-home mommy of Ty (age 6), Jayden and Zack (2 year old twins!) and wife to my amazing husband of 10 years, Paul. Two and a half years ago we became members of a very unique club-“Parents of a Special Needs Child”. Our beautiful son Zack was born with a genetic disorder causing so many health and developmental issues including; cardiac defect (TAPVD) and blocked pulmonary vein, seizures, global deveolopmental delay, facial anomolies, hydrocephalus, low muscle tone, GERD, bilateral moderate to severe hearing loss (requiring hearing aids), feeding issues (including aspiration on all liquids), Gtube (stomach feeding tube) to name a few.
Over the last two years, I have found my own strength, perseverance, patience and inner SuperMommy! I have been called on to be Advocate, Cheerleader, Doctor, Nurse, Warrior and sometimes just a loving mommy! I’m at home with my sons so that Zackie can attend weekly physio, occupational and speech therapies. We are so lucky to have a “Dream Team” of women following our Zackie and encouraging him to reach his potential! At the same time, I have a sadness and grief that very few moms ever know…the loss of a dream for my son and for his brothers. I am reminded daily of just how lucky we are to have Zack’s smiles and interaction with our family (especially his two brothers). The moms I know in this club are an inspiration to me and motivate me to never accept no as an answer- these amazing warrior mommies will stop at nothing to get the medical attention, specialized therapy or individualized program in the school system. Parents struggle every day with the added stress of having a child with Special Needs. I hope that through these posts, I can be a voice to speak for this group in which I belong, inspire a mom as I have been inspired and reach out to a community who has taught me unparalleled determination, unconditional love and inner strength.
