Toronto now has a Mayor that I had the pleasure of speaking with over two years ago!
We had been invited, like other Patient Ambassadors, to be a featured family at the SickKids Radiothon hosted on 1010. The boys and I sat down during John Tory’s “shift” in the Atrium at the hospital and recounted our story of love and loss with our sweet Zack. We told John about our amazing son, took the time to also thank the nurses and doctors who had cared for him and us and told about how we said good-bye during our last days.
As we shared our journey, Mr. Tory was overwhelmed with emotion. I found it hard to actually finish speaking, while looking at him sobbing. He cried with us so much that the boys still talk about the man with the drippy nose.
During the commercial break, I passed HIM a Kleenex to console him, while he shared his love for his kids and grandkids. He was real, sweet and empathetic.
When my boys woke up today, I told them that John Tory was the new Mayor of Toronto! “Mr. Snotbubbles is Toronto’s Mayor?” Yes, boys, but only YOU and I can call him that okay? (PS. they really mean that is a sweet way, he was truly lovely). Congrats Mr. Mayor!

November 10, 2014 at 1:53 pm (10 years ago)It’s actually really nice to read this and know that he is a real person and not just someone in media and on media. Lovely post and I am glad you had the chance to meet him. I haven’t met Tory in person. I don’t really know if I support him yet BUT time will tell and perhaps he will prove himself to be a great politician. It sounds like he was very touched by your special story.
